Bank of America recently named UCP Saddle Pals volunteer Jackie DeMuth a Local Hero for her work with UCP and other organizations that help children with developmental disabilities. The award included a $5,000 grant for Saddle Pals!

Detailed training for volunteers is provided and is scheduled on an on-going basis!

Sidewalker
Job description: Work directly with the student to provide emotional, cognitive and physical support.

Requirements: Must be a minimum of 14 years old, be able to walk at the horse's pace for 30 minutes, complete a training course, and commit at least one hour a week for a complete session. No horse experience is necessary!

Leader
Job description: Lead the horse during lessons.

Requirements: Must be a minimum of 16 years old, have extensive horse experience, complete a sidewalker and a leader training course, and commit to at least one hour a week for one complete session.

Horse Handler
Job description: Prepares horses for lessons, assists with pasture turnouts.

Requirements: Must be a minimum of 12 years old, have prior horse experience, complete an orientation and a training, and commit to at least one hour a week for one complete session.

Community Service and Facility Maintenance

Job description: General maintenance of the barn. This may include cleaning up manure, sweeping walkways, painting, or cleaning. We are also interested in anyone with professional training; for example: carpentry skills, electricians or plumbers.

Requirements: Must be a minimum of 12 years old, attend an orientation, and commit to a minimum of 15 hours. Scheduling is done on an individual basis. Nor horse experience is required.
