Project P.L.A.Y. and Partner Camps

Project P.L.A.Y.
UCP’s Project P.L.A.Y. is a social recreation program that provides play-oriented activities for young adults to learn life skills. This sports program promotes physical fitness, recreational and social opportunities for children with developmental disabilities like autism, epilepsy, intellectual disability, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy outside of the traditional school day.

WAVE Camp and Camp COOL
These two sport-based activities for young adults with developmental disabilities are collaborative efforts between Dr. Scott Modell, Sacramento State University, Access Leisure, Disabled Sports, UCP of Greater Sacramento and other community groups. WAVE Camp runs in July and features water skiing on adaptive equipment, scuba diving, kayaking and sailing. Many campers attend for multiple years. Camp COOL runs in January and includes skiing, sled hockey/skating and snowmobiling.

A.C.E. Camp
Completely dependent on donations in order to run, A.C.E. Camp takes place at Grizzly Creek Ranch and is an opportunity to extend lessons and services to the kids who have attended UCP’s Autism Center for Excellence that year. A.C.E. Camp gives them the opportunity to celebrate their successes and put the skills they’ve learned into practice. To donate to A.C.E. Camp, contact Steve Horton, director of development and marketing, at (916) 283-8312 or shorton@ucpsacto.org.

Success at WAVE Camp

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 9 months old, Krissy, now 22, had the chance to water ski for four years, but was too scared to participate. Yet, despite struggling to walk every day, she finally strapped on water skis, slid backward and soared on the water. “My advice to kids with disabilities is to live your life to the fullest and try to do the most you can,” Krissy said. “If you think you can’t…try. You never know.”
